The town of Algueña recently hosted an important international event as part of the European CERV Town Twinning project, "Our Urban Agenda: Walking Together Towards the Sustainability of Our Rural Societies in Collaboration with municipality of Varvarin", held from October 22nd to 26th, 2024. The event brought together participants from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Estonia, and Bulgaria, marking a significant moment for cross-border collaboration on the future of rural communities in Europe.
The gathering focused on tackling the unique challenges that rural areas face, such as adapting to climate change, promoting sustainable economic development, and empowering younger generations to take active roles in civic life. The event created a platform where municipalities could exchange knowledge, share experiences, and develop joint strategies for ensuring long-term sustainability.
Leaders and experts from the participating countries engaged in a series of workshops, panel discussions, and collaborative sessions. These activities covered key topics such as rural development, climate adaptation, and the role of youth in shaping the future of these communities. Throughout the event, the emphasis was on practical, action-oriented solutions that could be applied to different rural contexts across Europe.
Intercultural cooperation was another cornerstone of the event, as it encouraged dialogue between diverse regions, fostering long-term partnerships to drive innovative approaches to rural challenges. By bringing together policymakers, rural development professionals, and local stakeholders, the event laid the groundwork for stronger, more resilient rural societies.
As rural areas play a vital role in Europe’s social and environmental landscape, events like this are crucial for driving progress. Algueña’s role as host highlighted its commitment to sustainable rural development and its openness to international cooperation.
